Surfside sits on the north bank of the Clyde estuary, just north of Batemans Bay and a short trip over the bridge from our office. It is a mostly residential suburb, with a south-east facing beach on the bay and the Cullendulla Creek Nature Reserve on its eastern edge, home to one of the largest stands of grey mangroves south of Sydney. Like many established coastal suburbs, it has plenty of older homes sitting on good blocks.

Designing for the site

Surfside blocks vary, and some look back over the bay. Near the water we design for salt air, wind and sun, and choose materials and fixings that last. On the rising ground, footings, drainage and access need care; our guide to building on a sloping coastal block covers the detail. Where a block backs onto bush or the reserve, it may carry a bushfire (BAL) rating. We prepare a preliminary BAL assessment in-house during design, and bring in an accredited BPAD consultant where the site needs one.
